Another new artist I came across on my Easter travels in Poland. His work relates to my project closely, the idea of the viewer/observer looking upon the lives of unknown figures in private settings. He toys with images of 'people' unknown/known, identity and intimacy. 'He strives for images that are free, poetic, full of imaginative ambiguities and, at the same time, characterized by intimacy' (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/26/nyregion/nyregionspecial2/26liarts.html?_r=1).

I enjoy the colours and the brush stroke, sketchy finish to the paintings. Fischl is argued to 'desire to turn the viewer into a reluctant and embarrassed witness' (http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,967501-2,00.html).

All the More Real: Portrayals of Intimacy and Empathy
August 12–October 14, 2007

Some the main themes were intimacy and self-identity. Dealing with 'the various strategies artists use to provoke or deflect an emotional response from the viewer. Composed of realist and hyperrealist imagery, the exhibition is not concerned with realism per se, rather it is focused on the drive behind realistic imagery: the effort to capture the essence of the thing itself' http://www.parrishart.org/Past.asp?id=177

Artists in the exhibition include: Vito Acconci, Diane Arbus, Ross Bleckner, Louise Bourgeois, Chuck Close, James Croak, Emily Eveleth, Till Freiwald, Lucien Freud, Tom Friedman, Karel Funk, Tim Gardner, Tierney Gearon, Robert Gober, Joan Goldin, Jeff Hesser, Y.Z. Kami, Elizabeth King, Gustav Klimt, Loretta Lux, Alexandra Moore, Ron Mueck, Catherine Murphy, Alice Neel, Catherine Opie, Evan Penny, Jenny Saville, Egon Schiele, Claudette Schreuders, Joan Semmel, Cindy Sherman, Do Ho Suh and Cynthia Westwood.
